Wanindu Hasaranga Withdraws from IPL 2024 Due to Injury

Sunrisers Hyderabad's IPL 2024 campaign takes a hit as leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is ruled out due to a left ankle injury, confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The 26-year-old sought medical advice in Dubai, leading to the decision for rest and rehabilitation.

According to sources, SLC formally notified the BCCI of Hasaranga's unavailability for the tournament. Shyam, Hasaranga's manager, stated, "Sri Lanka Cricket has written to the BCCI informing them about his unavailability. He went to Dubai for medical advice and stayed there for three days. Given the current situation, the expert's advice is that he should rest rather than participate in the IPL this season."

Initially, there were assurances from the player's camp regarding his IPL appearance, but medical counsel prompted the withdrawal. Notably, Hasaranga's absence coincides with Sri Lanka's Test series against Bangladesh.

This development reignites discussions about foreign players' commitments and subsequent withdrawals from the IPL. Hasaranga's Test selection, juxtaposed with his reduced IPL auction price, adds complexity to the situation. His base price of INR 1.5 crores marked a significant drop from his previous INR 10.75 crores valuation.

Speculations abound regarding players withdrawing from the league post-auction if their financial expectations are not met. However, Hasaranga's manager refutes any correlation between the withdrawal and auction value.

This incident underscores the challenges faced by franchises and cricket boards in managing player commitments amidst a packed international and domestic calendar.
